Sourcing Name Data
December 17, 2024

To help you find the perfect baby name, we need a lot of data. Several govenrments around the world publish name data collected from births and deaths. We've collected data from the following sources:
- Irish births from 1964 to 2021 published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
- American births from 1880 to 2014 published by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
- Births in England and Wales from 1996 to 2021 pusblished by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
- French name rankings from 1900 to 2018 published by the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE).
- Spanish birth statistics for 2023 published by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE).
- Turkish names published by Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK).
Each new source contributes brand new names to our dataset as well as giving us more information about the history of the name, its cultural affinity and its usage with respect to gender.
After the names and statistics from each source have been incorporated into our database, we re-run our clustering and machine learning algorithms so that we can make the best possible recommendations.
We're always looking for new sources of name data. If you know of any, please let us know.
